How to get a free virtual number for WhatsApp Business

4 min read Principiante Updated Apr 2025

If you landed here looking for a “free and quick” number to keep your personal WhatsApp separate from your business one, you’re on the right track… with some caveats.

A virtual number can work, yes. The thing is, this topic comes with plenty of pretty promises and quite a lot of small print. Better to know that before wasting your time.

Short answer

  • Free virtual numbers do exist.
  • They don’t always work with WhatsApp verification.
  • Many are from the US or Canada, not from your own country.
  • For testing or as a stopgap, they can do the job.
  • For a business that wants to use it seriously, a cheap prepaid SIM is usually more reliable.

What is a virtual number?

It’s a phone number that doesn’t rely on a classic phone line as such, but on a service that lets you receive calls or SMS from an app or a website.

For our purposes, it can help you:

  • keep your personal number separate from your business one,
  • run tests without buying another physical SIM,
  • and, in some cases, verify a WhatsApp Business account or connect a number to Darto.

What matters before you jump in

1. Free doesn’t mean stable

Many free services recycle numbers or limit which SMS they can receive. That means:

  • it works today and not tomorrow,
  • the verification SMS may never arrive,
  • or the number may stop being available.

2. WhatsApp may not accept every number

Even if the number exists, that doesn’t guarantee WhatsApp will accept it without problems. Sometimes SMS or call verification fails, or the number simply has too much usage history.

3. They’re usually foreign numbers

Most free options are US numbers. If you want a number from your own country, you’re usually looking at paid options.

4. For a real business, you want control

If that number is going to be important for serving customers, the sensible thing is for it to be truly yours and not depend on a free app that might change its rules tomorrow.

How to try to get one for free

One of the best-known options is TextNow, which usually offers US numbers for calls and SMS.

It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a reasonable way to try.

Steps with TextNow

  1. Download the app: it’s available on Play Store and the App Store
  2. Create your account: you can sign up with email, Google or Facebook
  3. Set up your virtual number:
    • Tap Set Up
    • Grant the basic permissions for calls and messages
    • When it asks for your location, it’s usually best to choose Don't use location
    • Enter a US area code and search for options
    • Pick the number you prefer from the list
  4. Keep it safe: check what your number is and test receiving a message if you can

How to test it with WhatsApp Business or Darto

If you’re going to use it with WhatsApp Business:

  1. Open WhatsApp Business or the connection process in Darto
  2. Choose use a different number
  3. Enter the full virtual number, with the right country code
  4. Wait for the verification SMS or call
  5. If the code arrives, enter it and continue the normal process

If you’re going to use it with Darto, remember one important thing:

  • the number must be able to receive Meta’s code,
  • and you need to keep access to that number afterwards, not just for five minutes.

If it doesn’t work, don’t push it too hard

If the code doesn’t arrive or WhatsApp rejects the number, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. Often that number simply isn’t valid for that verification.

In that case, the most practical thing is to switch to one of these two alternatives:

  1. try another virtual number service,
  2. or go straight for a prepaid SIM, which usually gives you less trouble.

Other tools you can look at

If you want to explore alternatives to TextNow, here are a few:

  • SMS-man: virtual numbers from several countries to receive SMS online - sms-man.com
  • FreePhoneNum: temporary US and Canadian numbers - freephonenum.com
  • Hushed: app with local numbers and a limited free trial - hushed.com

Our honest recommendation

If you only want to test or set up something temporary, a free virtual number can do.

If you want it for a business that serves real customers, go for something you control:

  • a simple prepaid SIM,
  • an additional line,
  • or a paid virtual number with better support.

It will save you quite a few headaches.
